Nicholas Brightman is a freelance saxophonist and teacher in Indianapolis, Indiana. As a soloist, he has performed with the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra, the Nebraska Chamber Orchestra, the Pierre Monteux Domaine School Orchestra, the Purdue University Symphonic Band, and many exceptional high school bands throughout the state. In addition to several solo appearances, Mr. Brightman regularly appears with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, the Indianapolis Saxophone Quartet, and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra.
Mr. Brightman began playing saxophone in middle school under the direction of Dr. Cecil Leeson. He continued studying with Dr. Leeson at Ball State University's School of Music in Muncie, Indiana, where he earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Music Degrees. Since 1974, Mr. Brightman has been a clinician for the G. Leblanc Corporation of Kenosha, Wisconsin. Besides playing all the saxophones, Mr. Brightman also plays clarinet, bass clarinet and flute and recently started playing the bassoon.
During his extensive music career, Mr. Brightman has traveled across the country playing in orchestras supporting respected artists such as Natalie Cole, Andy Williams, and Perry Como. He has played engagements in and around the Indianapolis area with Aretha Franklin, Mel Torme, the Temptations, Lou Rawls, and many other fine musicians. On several occa-,ions, Mr. Brightman has also made solo recital appearances in connection with his teaching career.
Currently, Mr. Brightman is Adjunct Instructor of Saxophone and Saxophone Quartet at the Jordan College of Fine Arts at Butler University. He also taught there from 1973 to 1977. Between his stints at Butler, Mr. Brightman taught privately and was Coordinator of Applied Music Studies and Saxophone Instructor at Purdue University from 1985 to 1995. In addition to his other professional duties, Mr. Brightman owns and operates a successful woodwind repair business on the north s ide of Indianapolis.
Cheri Brightman is currently the Director of Bands in the Marion-Adams School Corporation. Her past teaching experiences include the Director of Bands at Dennis Middle School and the Associate Band Director at Richmond High School. Prior to teaching in the Richmond schools, she was Director of Bands for eight years in the Union County School Corporation. Her teaching includes; beginning band, sixth grade band, seventh grade band, eighth grade band, jazz band, concert band, marching band, spirit band, general music, and music theory. She has also taught a music theory course at the Indiana University East Campus in Richmond. She currently has a studio of 15 private saxophone students.
Cheri Brightman received her Bachelor of Science degree from the Ball State University School of Music in 1989. She also attended the Jordan College of Fine Arts at Butler University. She is a member of Gold Key National Honor Society, Indiana Music Educators, Indiana State Teachers Association, Music Educators National Conference, and the Indiana Bandmasters Association. Cheri is also an active adjudicator for the Indiana State School Music Association and the National Marching Band Judges Association.
Kathryn D. Spangler is a freelance musician and teaches saxophone in the Indianapolis area. She has been an adjunct saxophone instructor at Franklin College for the past three years as well as spending one year as a high school band director.
In addition to teaching Mrs. Spangler regularly appears with the Indiana Wind Symphony and the Indianapolis Saxophone Quartet. She has also appeared with the Carmel Symphony Orchestra and has spent many evenings at Indianapolis theaters playing in the pit orchestra. Besides playing all saxophones, Mrs. Spangler also plays flute and clarinet.
She is a 1998 graduate of Butler University where she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music. Mrs. Spangler began playing saxophone in 1985 under the instruction of Laura Haines and continued through college with Dr. Eugene Rousseau and Nicolas Brightman. She also spent two years studying jazz improvisation with Harry Medima.
